“Who did they say there are again?” These are not the words any coach likes to hear. However, it does happen – a lot.
Are you that coach that nobody knows? Are you seeking ways to improve your reputation, your business operations and hopefully your earnings? However, before we can fix the situation, it’s imperative you’re aware of what exactly needs fixing.
Here are the five reasons most coaches remain in obscurity and how you can get yourself out of this career slump.
1. The coach nobody knows fail clients all the time
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 60% of small businesses in this country fail. Yes, cash flow problems and growing too quickly are just some of the underlying causes, however, there is one other reason that causes businesses to fail faster than anything and that’s consistently disappointing clients all the time. If you’re known as an unreliable coach then very few people will be coming your way to book you. Fortunately, this is something that can be resolved before you have to close the shop. By hiring business managers to help you with the back end operations so you can focus on what really helps to grow your coaching practice.
2. They have a bad reputation
They say that your reputation precedes you. What this simply means is that people will hear things about you and your business before they ever get a chance to meet you. And well, if this reputation isn’t a good one, you can be sure that your odds of winning new contracts diminish significantly. A lot of coaches can be too proud to address this issue. However, take a moment to step back and find out what people are saying about you. Are the reports about you favourable? If not, it’s time to look at yourself and your business objectively in order to fix what needs fixing. Word of mouth will make or break your business.
3. The coach nobody knows attempts to do everything themselves
While we would all like to think that we’re superman or superwoman, the truth of the matter is that we’re only human. And this means that we cannot do everything by ourselves. Asking for help as and when you need it is not a sign of weakness; in fact, it is a sign of great leadership. Real leaders realise the need to have a good team of people working with them to achieve their vision. Are you a coach that is still planning your own diary and booking your own venues? It’s time to let go of this aspect of your business and hand have a talk with JMJ.
4. They don’t improve their skills
What sets apart the outstanding coaches from the ones no one knows? It’s the edge they have. And how do they get this edge? By constantly improving their skills. How did basketball legend Michael Jordan become the best at the game during his time? He practised every day, sometimes doing jump shots in the dark in a bid to improve his technique. He made the time to go above and beyond the other players. He was also often quoted as saying, “Everybody has talent, but ability takes hard work.” So, no matter how charismatic you think you are, you still need to free yourself up from doing the stuff you don’t need to be doing so you can hone your skills.
5. The coach nobody knows doesn’t network enough
If you’re too busy running your business, then you’re probably too busy to network. As a coach, you need to be out there marketing yourself and building new relationships. You shouldn’t be stuck behind a desk answering phone calls and making sure your schedule is aligned. Successful coaches know how to delegate this aspect of their lives so that they have the time they need to truly go out there and build their career. With the right team in place, free yourself up to mix and mingle with the crowds, go on holiday to refresh and spend quality time with your family, knowing that your business is in good hands.
So, do you still want to be the coach nobody knows or are you ready to build your business and ensure that it will become everything and more of what you’ve dreamt it to be?
